Vandals Putting Glue In Locks Of Dormont Businesses

DORMONT (KDKA) — Over the past few weeks, four select businesses in Dormont have targeted by vandalism.

The owner of TJS Sports and Mini Mart on West Liberty Avenue told KDKA he received a rude welcome even before he opened for business.

“While we were painting the place and doing renovations, the first week we came in and there was dog poop on the steps, this was maybe three or four times in the first week,” said Edward Phillips.

After the store opened for business, someone damaged his locks.

“We came in and someone had put silicon or glue inside our locks and we couldn’t get into the store,” Phillips said.

The vandal didn’t stop there, less than half a block away, they committed the same crime at Moonstones and Metaphysical Haven on the corner of Potomac and West Liberty.

“I got superglue in my locks three times three times now,” said owner Amy Mokaricky.

A few doors away, Vera Shelton discovered that someone put glue in her locks at her mini mart.

“When I came in Monday the door was stuck and I couldn’t get my key in, it wouldn’t work,” Shelton said.

Three African Americans owned businesses who just opened in the past month were targeted. Josh Maddox owns a barbershop along West Liberty Avenue.

Some of businesses can’t help but think some of the vandalism is racially motivated

“We had a guy, late night, came through and superglued my lock and put some spray paint all over the doors and windows,” Maddox said. “I think it’s some racism stuff to be honest with you.”

Vandalism caused the businesses several hundred dollars a piece.

Residents Escape From Fire That Destroyed Dormont Duplex

DORMONT (KDKA) — Fire destroyed a duplex in Dormont early Monday morning.

It started after midnight in a duplex in the 1200 block of Tennessee Avenue.

“It was just roaring, you couldn’t even see the front of the whole house. It was just completely engulfed and after they started getting some of that down, the fire trucks started coming,” Leonard Dilling said.

Four people were inside at the time and managed to escape.

“They had to exit the rear of the structure,” said Dormont Fire Chief Jeff Arnold. “They couldn’t come out through the front because of the fire on the porches.”

Chief Arnold said the fire started on the porch, spread through the walls and into the structure.

The cause is still under investigation, but no one was injured.

“He grills in the front yard and he usually takes it back onto the porch. I’m not gong to speculate, but I don’t know, maybe if it wasn’t out all the way,” Chip Huggins said.

Pens Fans Open Up Their Wallets At Parade Celebration

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — “Beautiful day, beautiful day in Pittsburgh,” shouted one vendor, selling Pittsburgh Penguins pennants near the parade route.

City officials could not have picked a better day to attract a crowd of Pens fans — and an enthusiastic crowd.

“Let’s go Pens.  Let’s go Pens,” was the chant heard repeatedly.

It was a crowd certain to attract vendors with all kinds of merchandise for sale.

“Get your Stanley Cup championship shirts here,” yelled another vendor.

Anything that brings 400,000 people into downtown Pittsburgh is bound to have an economic impact, and there’s no doubt that this Pens parade is doing just that.

This was a common refrain.

“I’m actually spending a lot more money than I anticipated,” says Natalie Kazmierszak of Dormont.

Former Sto-Rox teacher Mike Pettinato came back from Phoenix and just for food and souvenirs, he’s spending “probably two hundred dollars.”

Seems to be a popular number.

“Probably close to two hundred dollars or more, when you eat and stuff, and we’re going to have a great time,” Shelly Spidle of Altoona told KDKA money editor Jon Delano.

And there was a lot to spend money on like this Pens hat for five bucks — and, of course, T-shirts galore.

Yinzers in the Strip relocated to Market Square for parade day.

“We figured we’d bring it down to Market Square,” said Jimmy Coen of Yinzers.

Delano:  “How’s it going today?  Are you selling?”

Coen:  “Oh, tremendous. You know everybody is in a good mood.  Everybody’s happy. What a beautiful day we have.”

Vendors were making money — like this man selling those pens hats.

“I did about fourteen hundred dollars so far,” said Robert Burlett, a local vendor from Mt. Washington.

No surprise.

Lots of people like Harry Zabetakis of Kilbuck Township admit to being suckers for souvenirs.

“I’m a hoarder for that stuff. My wife tells me all the time,” says Zabetakis.

And it’s not just souvenirs — the restaurants downtown were booming — with plenty of long lines at the old favorites.

Fortunately, not everything has a price.

Darrell Leeper of Chartiers City was playing his saxophone, hoping for a few bucks in his music case.

And after a hot day on the parade route, these kids found a great way to keep cool – jumping in the fountain at PPG Plaza — all for free.

Dormont Man Pleads Guilty To Killing Wife

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) – A Dormont man has admitted under a plea deal to charges he killed his wife at their Pennsylvania home.

David Angle, 63, had been charged with homicide. He pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter Tuesday afternoon.

Allegheny County homicide detectives say David Angle was arguing with 57-year-old Donna Angle about vodka when she tried to kick him in their Dormont home last September. They say he dragged her off a couch, stepped on her chest and pulled her arms before she became unconscious. He called 911 when he couldn’t revive her.

David Angle faces up to a decade in prison at his sentencing in September.

Angle is the brother of professional wrestler and former Olympian Kurt Angle.

“Prayers out to my brother and the whole family, it’s a hard time for everybody,” Kurt Angle said after a preliminary hearing in October. He added that his brother is doing okay. “He’s alright, I mean, it’s been really hard.”

Hollywood Lanes Celebrates 90 Years With 1920s-Style Party

DORMONT (KDKA) – Hollywood Lanes has been a Dormont staple for decades. But, they are celebrating a big milestone this year.

To celebrate their 90th year in business, owner Jeff Clement held a 1920s throwback party. The event featured karaoke, cake and of course, bowling.

Clement said he’s proud to offer a place for the family to gather and share an old time tradition.

“To keep something nostalgic and a big part of the community and place for kids and families to go,” Clement said.

One special guest that attended the bowling alley’s birthday party is Derek. He battled leukemia last year and beat it with some help from Hollywood Lanes.

“We threw an event last year for him to help build his spirits up a little bit,” Clement said.

The historic landmark initially opened in 1926, but it was almost turned into other businesses three years ago. That’s when Clement decided he would bite the bullet and buy and restore it instead.

“We used to go to the Hong Kong restaurant and then we would come in and bowl here. Who knew one day that I would own the place?” he said. “The most important was the people that this place has brought. Man, it’s just brought the most amazing people in the world.”

It was a doggone good way to say goodbye to summer.

Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summertime, and that means it’s time to close the pools and get ready for the chillier autumn air.

Not before one last dip in Dormont though.

But this was no ordinary day at the pool.

The swimming pool was closed to people this afternoon for the Dormont Doggie Dip. It’s a canine-only event that’s become a fun, annual Labor Day tradition.

Owners can sign their pets up for one of three sessions – a small dog session, an all dog session and a large dog session.

The dogs are able to play, swim and make new doggie friends. There are also prizes, raffles and vendors for the owners.

All the proceeds go to benefit the Western Pa. Humane Society and the Dormont Pool.

In a press release, Western PA Humane Society Managing Director Hala Nuemah said: “This end of summer event is one of the cutest, most fun events of the year for pet owners. While their dogs swim and have the time of their life, the owners can know their participation in this event raises crucial funds for animals in need in our community.”

The Humane Society, Dormont Borough and The Dog Stop organize the event.

Dormont Pizzeria Hoping To Be First To Deliver Wine With Pizza

DORMONT (KDKA) — Would you like a bottle of wine to be delivered with your pepperoni pizza?

A local business wants to be the first in our area to do just that.

Giovanni’s Pizza & Pasta in Dormont already has a bustling delivery business, but they want to take things one step further.

“You can call us and say you want an extra-large pepperoni pizza and a bottle of Chardonnay,” said owner Fethi Turan.

They already have the license to deliver beer with your pizza, which the state began allowing about a year and a half ago.

As a further sign of relaxing liquor laws, the Giant Eagle Market District in Robinson become the first supermarket in Pennsylvania to begin selling bottled wine-to-go last month.

Giovanni’s just got an email approving them for one of two necessary licenses to deliver the wine. It’s for transferring wine. They’ve also applied for a wine-to-go or wine expanded permit.

But a spokesperson for the PLCB says the details have to be worked out before wine delivery with your pizza can become a reality.

“The question that our office of chief counsel is considering at this point is whether wine-to-go can be delivered,” said Elizabeth Brassell from the PLCB. “There are certain conditions that Act 39 imposes upon the sale of wine-to-go.”

For instance, the ID of anyone who appears younger than 35 has to be scanned, and the sales have to be done by someone who’s at least 18 years of age.

As for how long it might take to work out these details?

“I’d say probably within a week or so, we’d have a determination on the matter,” said Brassell.

Turan says they already follow rules for delivering beer with an order.

“When you call in, that order has to be paid here with a credit card,” said Turan. “The person who’s paying must be over 21. Every time we go to the house, we check the credit card with the matching license.”

He hopes it’s worked out soon so Giovanni’s can be the first to deliver a bottle of vino with your pie.

“We’ll be able to deliver it to you right away,” he said.

Investigators were first called Thursday to the 2700-block of Espy Avenue over reports of an unresponsive man found in a yard.

Just before noon, the homeowner, who does not want to be identified, says as she let her dog out, she noticed the man in her backyard with his head on her bottom step. He wasn’t moving.

Police say the yard is not visible from the street.

“This was a nice neighborhood, till this got to it,” said neighbor Richard Maier. “It’s scary.”

The man had been shot at least twice and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identifies the victim as 35-year-old Chaz Robinson of Dormont.

Investigators said they believe Robinson, nicknamed “Smoke,” was wounded Wednesday evening and ran from the shooting scene to the backyard of the Espy Avenue home to hide, but he collapsed and died there.

The shooting incident on Wednesday happened around 8 p.m. at the intersection of LaSalle and Broadway Avenues.

“About 8 o’clock last night, I heard fireworks. I looked out the window and didn’t see nothing,” said Maier. “I just heard fireworks… like rapid fire.”

Dormont Police responded to the area near the shooting scene Wednesday evening where they found ballistic evidence at that time, but no victim.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Dormont Police or the Allegheny County Police homicide unit at 412-473-1300.

They are also asking anyone with surveillance cameras in the area to contact them.

Police: Dormont Shooting Was Over Marijuana, Suspect Turns Himself In

DORMONT (KDKA) — Police have taken a suspect into custody one day after a shooting victim was found dead in the backyard of a home in Dormont.

According to Allegheny County Police, 23-year-old Timothy Bevan of Mount Oliver turned himself in Friday afternoon. A warrant had been issued for his arrest earlier in the day.

He is being charged with homicide.

The victim, 35-year-old Chaz Robinson, was found dead Thursday morning in the backyard of a home on Espy Avenue. The homeowner had opened the door to let her dog and found the body.

Investigators say Robinson was shot on Wednesday evening. Police responded to a report of shots fired that night at the intersection of LaSalle and Broadway Avenues. They found ballistic evidence at that time, but no victim.

According to the criminal complaint, the incident Wednesday night began as an alleged drug deal. Police say a witness to the shooting, who is not being identified, told investigators they had gone to sell Robinson marijuana.

However, according to the criminal complaint, Robinson pulled out a gun, demanded his money back after paying for the drugs and threatened the witness if they didn’t call their main supplier to bring more marijuana.

The criminal complaint reports that the witness texted the alleged supplier, identified by police as Tim, and made arrangements for him to meet them with more marijuana.

The witness told police, according to the criminal complaint, that during the meeting, Robinson allegedly grabbed the bag of pot and ran away. Both ran after him.

The criminal complaint reports that the witness told investigators that both the alleged supplier and Robinson had guns.

According to the criminal complaint, the witness told police they saw “Tim firing a gun at Robinson” while the men were running on LaSalle Avenue.

Authorities say Robinson suffered two gunshot wounds, one to the chest and the other to the buttocks. In the backyard where his body was found, the criminal complaint reports the gate was damaged “as if someone ran through the gate to get in the rear yard.”

Police also found shell casings, a gun and the plastic bag of marijuana.

Bevan is now being held in the Allegheny County Jail while he awaits arraignment.

McDonald’s To Give Out Free Bottles Of Big Mac Special Sauce

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The Big Mac was invented in Uniontown by the late Jim Delligatti, 50 years ago. And he never divulged the secret of his trademark “special sauce.”

Fast forward to 2017.

For the first time ever, bottles of special sauce will be handed out to the public. The first 100 customers at McDonald’s in Dormont will each receive a bottle at 1 p.m. on Thursday. National Menus Innovator Mike Harasz says 10,000 bottles will be given out nationwide.

“You’re actually able to pick them up for free. But it is a first come, first served basis. So once we’re out, we’re out.”

Chef Mike Harasz helped come up with the idea to make the Big Mac bigger, and smaller. Last November, Pittsburgh was the test market for the Mac Junior and the Grand Mac, to see how they sold. City residents must have eaten a lot of them, because they soon went nationwide.

Back to the special sauce giveaway — we managed to convince Chef Mike to divulge the secret of the special sauce.

“Our special sauce is actually like a mayonnaise, mustard, pickle, relish-based sauce. A little onion and garlic. We ensure that wherever it’s made, it’s consistent throughout the United States and everywhere else.”

All locations for the Thursday giveaway will be released Wednesday on McDonalds.com.

Michael Delligatti, son of the late creator of the Big Mac says now that the secret to their special sauce is out, “What can I say? My dad, he passed away a couple months ago and now the secret’s out.”

Delligatti says that the 100 free bottles of special sauce will be given away at the McDonald’s on West Liberty Avenue Thursday at 1 p.m.

“That’s the only one where they’re going to distribute [the special sauce],” says Delligatti.

Also, if you want your own bottle you have to tell the cashier “There’s a Big Mac for that.”

Severe Weather Causes Damage In Western Pennsylvania

DORMONT (KDKA) — Severe weather battered western Pennsylvania Monday afternoon.

In Butler County, the sound of chainsaws filled the Coral Ridge Estates Trailer Park after it was hit Monday afternoon by a quick-moving severe thunderstorm, packing powerful winds.

A number of trailers and parked cars were damaged by falling trees and limbs, but there were no serious injuries reported.

Soon after the storm ended, residents and volunteers were all pitching in to help clean up the mess.

Fran Brown drove to the trailer park from Meadville.

He told KDKA-TV’s Ralph Iannotti, “My father-in-law lives right here, me and my wife came down to help clean up and pick up after everything. My sister-in-law is here, her husband and friends.”

Ronnie Horstman, who has a landscaping business with her husband, said, “A lot of strangers came together here today. I’m not from this town, I don’t know a lot of people who came and put fourth an effort to help us out.”

Becky Gitzen was driving back to the trailer park at the height of the storm. Her trailer wasn’t damaged, but she says she’ll never forget the drive home.

“I felt like I was on a piece of ice that was rumbling, ‘cause I was going up and coming down,” she said. “I’d go up and come down. I thought I’m going to go over in my little Toyota car, but it stayed upright.”

Lisa Washington’s Report:

The storm lasted only a few moments, and then it was over. But the damage was done.

Trailer park resident Kimberly Ford said, “I’m just glad everybody is okay, and we didn’t get hurt or anything.”

As for power outages, at the height of the storm, as many as 40,000 people were in the dark.

As of 10 p.m., Penn Power reported more than 11,500 people in the dark, and Duquesne Light reported 2,200 people still without electricity.

In other parts of the area, an amazing time-lapse video shows the storm moving through downtown Pittsburgh:

Elsewhere in the city, large tree fell on a home in Brookline around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Bay Ridge Avenue and Sussex Avenue. No injuries were reported, but the woman who lives inside the home was startled.

“The noise was very loud, the tree kind of broke in half, split open when it fell down,” Linda Lander said.

In Beaver County, a high winds forced a large tree to fall onto a vehicle in a man’s front yard.

KDKA’s Bob Allen Reports —

“I got a call that a tree might be on my car, and there it was, the only day I parked it there,” John Nagy said. “I gotta do it myself, because the utility company won’t do it.”

In West Mifflin, a tree and power lines came down along the road near Brierly Lane and Aspen Street.

There were also delays on the Red Line Monday evening, due to overhead wires touching a tree at Arlington.

Additionally, the Blue Line at the Overbrook Junction was having switching issues due to the heavy rain.

In South Fayette, Mayview at Boyce Road was closed due to flooding.

Because of the storms, there were no evening activities for Pittsburgh Public Schools, and cancellations at St. Margaret Mary in Moon Township, Clarion-Limestone Area School District and Young Scholars of Western Pennsylvania Charter. Get the full list here.

Also, Sharon City School District schools will be closed Tuesday, due to damage.

The entirety of western Pennsylvania was placed on a Tornado Watch Monday afternoon and around 2:30 a Tornado Warning was in effect for several counties.

Two Wheelchairs Stolen From Handicapped Woman

DORMONT (KDKA) — A handicapped woman in the South Hills says she feels “violated” after someone stole two wheelchairs from her home.

Fifty-eight-year old Sherry Valentine is confined to a wheelchair. The former school crossing guard suffers from COPD, and she has bounced back from two bouts of cancer.

“They took my freedom away, and they put me back to where I’m a burden on everybody again,” Valentine told KDKA-TV’s Ralph Iannotti.

Sometime late Sunday night, or early Monday morning, two wheelchairs — one of them electric — vanished from the front porch of Valentine’s Pioneer Avenue home. She said she would use the motorized chair to go see a friend up the street or to go down to the corner store.

“People think you like [being in a wheelchair],” Valentine said. “People make comments. ‘I wish I had one of them.’ I wish I didn’t have to have these.”

Valentine still has another wheelchair, but it has a broken wheel; she uses it to get around a little inside her home.

“I’m very upset on her behalf,” Valentine’s daughter Stephanie Marrotti, of Castle Shannon, said. “Who would do something like this? Obviously, they know there’s a person who’s handicapped who lives in the house. There were two wheelchairs, and a ramp [leading to the front porch].”

Valentine says despite her missing wheelchairs, she clings to the hope that the person who took them will have second thoughts about what they did. And her message to the porch theft was a short one.

“Bring them back, no questions asked, and I hope you don’t need [a wheelchair] one day.”

DORMONT (KDKA) — One person was killed and several were injured in a house fire in Dormont early Saturday morning.

Authorities responded to the fire in the 1100 block of Peermont Avenue around 4 a.m.

Four people were inside the home when the fire started.

“There was a heavy volume of fire, especially in the rear of the residence and the sides of the residence,” Dormont fire chief Mat Davis said. “It affected both exposure houses. We were actually battling one big fire and two small fires with it.”

Calvin Blake’s house is only a few feet away. He was awakened by the brightness of the flames and could feel the heat through the window.

“Looking out, I could see the flames coming right out of one of their windows, right at our house,” Blake said. “It was pretty intense.”

Once Blake got his wife and their pets out of the house, they saw their neighbor make a gallant attempt to save his family.

“Could have been the most desperate thing I’ve ever seen was him running in, a wall of black smoke coming at him as he’s running in trying to make sure his son got out of the house,” Blake said.

“The father turned into a superhero in his underwear, ran inside to grab his kids, tried to grab… it was astounding, in his bare feet,” Michelle Blake said.

Sadly, they could not save an elderly woman who was under a nurse’s care. Her body was found on the first floor.

Neighbors and firefighters say the smoke and flames were so intense, you could feel the heat a block away. Neighbors are praising firefighters for preventing the fire from destroying their home.

“[They] saved our house. Support your volunteer fire department. I’m so grateful. So grateful,” Michelle Blake said.

There were also two minor firefighter injuries.

The Allegheny County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

Theatre Historical Society Buys Hollywood Theater In Dormont

DORMONT (KDKA) — The Hollywood Theater has been showing all kinds of films on a single big screen for nearly a hundred years.

But its future was in jeopardy when the current owners couldn’t find a buyer interested in keeping the theater open.

“They had potential offers to sell it to have it become something other than a theater,” says Rick Fosbrink, executive director of the Theatre Historical Society of America.

That’s when the Theatre Historical Society cut a deal to buy the theater.

“Our mission is saving historic theaters, so we said, we would love to purchase it and continue to find a way to work with the Friends of the Hollywood,” Fosbrink told KDKA money editor Jon Delano on Monday.

The Friends of the Hollywood is a non-profit group that’s operated the theater.

A representative of the Friends of the Hollywood, who would not appear on camera, expressed concerns that the new ownership would change the culture and the kinds of films that are shown at the Hollywood.

No worries, says Fosbrink.

“We hope it’s a seamless transition,” he says. “We do plan to move our administrative offices to the Hollywood so that we’re there every day to continue the operation of the building. As for programming, we hope to continue doing a lot of the same things with the Friends of the Hollywood.”

That means independent films, cult films, major films after they’ve run elsewhere, and even old classic films like “Ben Hur” and “Spartacus,” best seen on the big screen.

And admission will remain lower than the for-profit movie theaters.

“It doesn’t have to create a profit,” he says. “Now it has to break even so that everybody can afford to continue doing what we’re doing, but it doesn’t have to generate profit.”

The Theatre Historical Society recently moved its headquarters from Chicago to Pittsburgh, and it has worked closely with the Heinz History Center which houses the Society’s archives.

Fosbrink says there’s a reason why his organization is so committed to Pittsburgh.

“In 1905 on Smithfield Street across from Kaufmann’s, Harry Davis and John P. Harris opened what was essentially the flashpoint of the movie theater industry,” he says. “They put up 96 chairs, a projector, and they showed movies constantly, all day long, from 8 a.m. to midnight. That’s the birth of the commercial movie theater.”

Right here in Pittsburgh.

DORMONT (KDKA) — The Hollywood Theater in Dormont welcomed a packed house Tuesday night to watch an advance screening of the new documentary on the life and work of iconic Pittsburgher: Fred Rogers.

On a decidedly less than beautiful night in the neighborhood, they lined up, still, to be part of the Neighborhood Premiere of “Won’t You Be My Neighbor.”

Braving bad weather is something you know a mailman can appreciate.

“How long has it been since you’ve seen people waiting in line to come into a movie theater? In the rain, yes,” said David Newell, who plays Mr. McFeely.

They came because “Mister Rogers” meant something to their childhood, or to their kids’ childhood.

“It’s gonna be generation-to-generation,” said Jim McVay, of Upper St. Clair. “I hope my girls’ kids will watch him someday.”

The documentary explores the magic behind Mr. Rogers’ land of make believe, and the very real impact he had on young viewers.

“There’s some things that are constant no matter what generation you’re in, and he tapped into that,” said one fan.

Before long, the free screening was full and they were turning people away, giving them a ticket to come back for another show.

Those lucky enough to snag a seat got to see Mr. McFeely presented with the key to Dormont, and were able to join their neighbors in that song we all know, from the show we all loved.

“Please won’t you be my neighbor,” they sang.

Newell says even though Fred Rogers was exceedingly modest, he would love the film. The movie opens in theaters Friday.
